He received the honorary title of Kozuke Daijo in the year 1664. He was the first Bizen Osafune smith to receive an honorary title in the Shinto time period. After meeting with Ikeda Mitsumasa (Daimyo of the Okayama fief) he started producing a lot of shrine dedicated blades for the Okayama fief area. Sword Details:
The blade is signed “Bishu Osafune Ju / Yokoyama Kodzuke Daijo Fujiwara Sukesada “ and includes the kanji variants that Kozuke no Daijo Sukesada is known for using in his signatures. This blade also has Tokubetsu Hozon papers by the NBTHK. The blade is in polish but does have a few small scratches as you can see in a few of the pictures.
This blade is incredible!! There is so much to see. Look at all of the incredible activity in the pictures!!!
There are many Kirikomi. I count 7 clear cut marks on the mune!!! Someone really used this blade.
Hada - Densely forged Itame mixed with Mokume and Chikei. Bo Utsuri is very much present just off of the shinogi line. There is an abundance of Ara-Nie and Nie-Hotsure. There are areas of Yubashiri and Sumigane for you to enjoy!!!
The blade also exhibits a Mizukage “water shadow” at about a 45 degree angle at the ha-machi. This is created when the blade is quenched and is an indication of how far the blade was plunged into the basin. Kozuke no Daijo Sukesada is one of the few bladesmiths that is known for mizukage and is not an indication of saiha.
Hamon - Koshi-no-hiraita midare. There is strong Sunagashi and Inazume.
Boshi - Kaen (on one side) - “flame” looks like it is on fire due to the hakikake and activity of the nie / Nie Kuzure (on other side) - “nie break” abundant nie in kissaka, boshi is not distinctly formed. There is a fully formed kaeri, the kaeri contains abundant nie.
Nagasa (cutting edge length) - 16"
Blade is presented in Shirasaya
